DX51D GI Coil

Choose DX51D galvanized steel coil for parts that need general cold forming and a zinc-coated surface. Tell us what you manufacture—roofing profiles, ventilation ducts, panels or roll-formed parts—and we can review the steel grade, coating mass and coil dimensions against your production requirements.

What Does DX51D+Z Mean?

DX51D is a designation for continuously coated steel intended for general cold forming. The “+Z” suffix identifies a zinc coating. It describes a material route, but it does not by itself specify how much zinc is applied, whether the surface is suitable for painting, or whether the coil will form successfully in every tool. Those requirements belong in the purchase specification.

DX51D is a practical starting point for bends, folds and common profiles. For more demanding shapes, ask us to review DX52D or DX53D against your drawing and forming process. If your inquiry says “DX521D,” please confirm the designation: the commonly listed forming grade is DX52D. A change of grade should be checked against the applicable standard and mill test certificate.

Product Parameters

Parameter Supply / ordering detail
Product Continuously hot-dip galvanized steel coil
Grade DX51D+Z; other forming grades subject to inquiry
Applicable specification Agreed EN 10346 edition or an explicitly agreed customer specification
Thickness / width Specify required dimensions and tolerances; available combinations depend on the mill and coating
Zinc coating Standard-designated coating or contract-defined total coating mass, with test and acceptance criteria agreed before production
Surface / treatment Spangle appearance, passivation and oiling to be confirmed for the end use
Coil configuration Mill or slit edge, coil ID, maximum coil weight and export packing by order
Inspection / documents MTC and agreed coating inspection records; certificate of origin and applicable export documents

All supplied dimensions, coatings, tolerances and documents are subject to the confirmed quotation, purchase order and producing mill.

How to Choose the Zinc Coating

Zinc provides a barrier over the steel and helps protect small exposed areas through sacrificial action. Coating mass is one input to corrosion performance; exposure, cut edges, forming damage, storage, maintenance and any paint system also matter. An indoor duct and an exposed roof should therefore not be specified solely by the same “GI coil” description.

What Do Z30, Z40 and Z60 Mean?

Some commercial inquiries use Z30, Z40 and Z60 as shorthand for a requested total coating mass across both sides of 30, 40 and 60 g/m² respectively. Under that expressly agreed convention, “Z60” means 60 g/m² combined—not 60 g/m² on each face. Even then, the two faces need not each carry exactly 30 g/m². State the required total, any minimum per face, the sampling and test method, and whether the figure is a target or an acceptance minimum in the contract.

Do not transfer these shorthand codes between standards. A JIS Z60 designation can mean 600 g/m² across both sides, while ASTM G60 specifies 0.60 oz/ft² across both sides—approximately 183 g/m². EN coating designations must likewise be ordered against their stated standard requirements. If you need a low coating mass such as 60 g/m² total, describe it in full as a customer-defined requirement and obtain mill confirmation rather than assuming it is a standard EN coating class.

Match the Coating to the Finished Part

For a protected indoor component, a buyer may investigate a lighter coating if the project specification permits it. Exposed roofing and wall products generally call for a separate review of the environment, expected service life and any additional paint system. Higher coating mass can provide more zinc for protection, but it can also affect forming and cost. Send the intended application and exposure conditions with your inquiry so the proposed coating can be checked before quotation.

EN, GB, ASTM and JIS: Specify the Standard First

EN 10346 uses DX-series designations such as DX51D and DX52D for coated forming steels. GB/T 2518, ASTM A653/A653M and JIS G 3302 serve their respective markets and use different grade or coating-designation conventions. A commercial cross-reference is only a starting point: confirm mechanical properties, coating requirements, tolerances and the exact standard edition before approving a substitute.

Application Scenarios

Roofing profile production

A roofing-sheet buyer can send a profile drawing, coil-width requirement and local exposure conditions. The quotation can then identify a suitable DX51D coil, the coating requirement, surface appearance and maximum coil weight accepted by the roll-forming line.

HVAC duct fabrication

A duct manufacturer can specify bend and lock-forming operations, sheet thickness and the finish needed for visible components. Reviewing these details helps avoid selecting a coating or surface treatment solely by its trade name.

Slit-coil supply for small profiles

A fabricator making channels or light-gauge parts can provide the slit-width schedule, edge requirements and handling limits. Coil configuration and protective packing can then be included in the same order specification.

These are illustrative purchasing scenarios, not claims about completed customer orders.

Inspection, Packing and Export Documents

Before shipment, confirm the agreed checks for dimensions, surface condition, mechanical properties and zinc coating mass. Request an MTC and any coating test records required by your contract. Export packing can be specified to protect the coil from moisture and edge damage during transport.

We can prepare a certificate of origin, MTC, commercial invoice, packing list, shipping documents and an export license where the product and destination legally require one. Document scope and destination-country requirements should be confirmed when placing the order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DX51D the same as DX52D?

No. They are different forming-grade designations. Share the part drawing and forming steps before changing the specified grade.

Does Z60 always mean 60 g/m²?

No. It can mean 60 g/m² total only when that commercial meaning is written into the purchase agreement. A JIS Z60 designation has a different meaning, and ASTM G60 is also different.

Is 60 g/m² enough for outdoor roofing?

There is no universal answer. Specify the project environment, intended service life, roofing system and required standard; then assess the coating and any paint system together.

What should I send for an accurate quote?

Send the grade and standard, thickness and tolerance, width, zinc mass stated in full units, surface finish, treatment, coil ID and weight limit, order quantity, destination port and required certificates. An existing MTC or purchase specification is useful for checking a replacement supply.

Request a DX51D Coil Quote

Tell us the finished product and send your specification or drawing. We will review the grade, coating designation and coil configuration with you before confirming the offer. For other grades and coating choices, see our galvanized steel coil range.
